The soil is important to get right for blueberries. This is because they can be prone to root rot.
The right soil needs to keep organics out of it. That means no compost, wood products, bark or anything that can decompose.
The perfect soil for blueberries is peat moss and pumice. A 2:1 ratio of pumice:peat moss would be a good place to start but you can go even higher on the pumice if you have reliable irrigation and you are prepared to give your plants water more often.
Pumice doesn’t decompose. Peat moss does but it does so very slowly.
If you want to fertilize your blueberries, simply spread your organic or synthetic fertilizer on top of the soil after it is planted. Don’t mix organics in the roots where they don’t belong.
If you get this foundation right, you’ll never have to worry about root rot.
